PELICANS

Did you notice pelican images like the one in the page logo? The city of Chetek, Wisconsin, gets its name from the Ojibwe word for "pelican". The name was originally spelled several ways, including "Shetak" and "Shetuc," but was standardized to "Chetek" when the first post office opened in 1872. American White Pelicans migrate through the area, especially in late April and May, and are a common sight on the Chetek Chain of Lakes.
